What Does the Name Dhiya Mean?

Dhiya is an Arabic given name meaning "light," "brightness," or "radiance." It represents the Arabic noun ḍiyāʾ (ضياء), built on the root ض و أ (ḍ - w - ʾ), which carries the sense of shining or giving off light. The same root produces ḍawʾ, the ordinary Arabic word for light. The dh at the start of the English spelling is a common way of writing the Arabic letter ḍād (ض), an emphatic "d" sound with no exact English equivalent.

The name is not related to the Indian name Diya, which comes from Hindi दीया, "lamp," and Sanskrit dīpa. It is, however, the same Arabic word as the name usually spelled Zia or Ziya: Persian and Urdu pronounce the Arabic ض as "z," which accounts for that spelling.

Dhiya Name History & Origins

The word ḍiyāʾ appears in the Quran. In verse 10:5, God is described as making the sun a ḍiyāʾ and the moon a nūr, both of which are translated as "light." The word's religious associations helped it become a personal name in Muslim societies, frequently as the first element of a compound such as Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn, "light of the religion." Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-Maqdisī, a Hanbali scholar who died in 1245, is a documented bearer of that compound.

Because Arabic names pass through many languages, the word has several established English forms. Arabic pronunciation gives spellings such as Dhiya and Diya; Persian and Urdu pronunciation gives Zia and Ziya. In South Asia the name is used mainly by Muslims and is usually written Diya, a spelling shared with the unrelated Hindi name for "lamp," which is why the two are sometimes confused.
