What Does the Name Dex Mean?

Dex is most often a short form of Dexter, a name taken from Latin dexter, meaning "on the right side" or "right-handed." In Latin the word also carried the figurative senses "skillful," "favorable," and "lucky," since the right hand was thought the auspicious one. The Latin term goes back to an older Indo-European root reconstructed as *deks-, "right hand," which also appears in Greek dexios and Sanskrit dákṣiṇa.

Used on its own, Dex has no separate etymology: it carries the derivation and meaning of Dexter rather than those of some unrelated word that happens to look similar. The same Latin dexter lies behind English "dexterity" and "ambidextrous," but those are later formations from the same root, not the source of the name.

Dex Name History & Origins

Dexter was used as a personal name in the Roman world and survives in medieval Latin documents as a byname or cognomen in the sense "right-handed" or "skillful." The English surname Dexter is generally derived from that Latin word. A competing explanation links it instead to the occupation of dyeing: a deyster, from Middle English dey ("dye") plus the suffix -ster, meaning a dyer. Which explanation stands behind the surname in a given family is not always certain, and the two derivations are often mentioned side by side.

The given name Dexter, and with it the shortening Dex, entered English use by way of the surname. Both forms have been used as first names in the English-speaking world since at least the nineteenth century; Dex works mainly as a familiar shortening of Dexter, though it is also given directly on its own.

In recent fiction, "Dex" is the nickname of Dexter Morgan, the protagonist of Jeff Lindsay's novels beginning with Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004) and of the television series based on them. That association is far later than the name's recorded history and is a literary use of an existing name, not its origin.
