What Does the Name Delphie Mean?
Delphie is an English feminine name usually understood as a diminutive of Delphine, a French name meaning "dolphin." Delphine is the feminine form of Latin Delphina, from Delphinus, which comes from Greek delphin, "dolphin." In French, the ordinary word for the animal became dauphin, but the given name preserves the Latin and Greek form.
The similar name Delphia is generally connected with the Greek place name Delphi rather than with delphin; Delphi's own etymology is uncertain. Delphie is sometimes treated as a short form of Delphia, so not every instance of Delphie necessarily carries the dolphin meaning. The Delphine derivation, however, is the one that gives the usual "dolphin" gloss.
Delphie Name History & Origins
Delphie is an English diminutive formed from Delphine with the common ending -ie. Delphine itself developed in French from the Latin feminine name Delphina. The masculine Latin Delphinus and its feminine form come from Greek delphin, "dolphin." The dolphin had religious associations in the Greek world: Apollo was worshipped as Apollo Delphinios, and the god was said to have appeared as a dolphin. The Latin name Delphinus was borne by a fourth-century bishop of Bordeaux, and the feminine Delphina was used in medieval France. Blessed Delphine of Glandèves (1283 - 1358), a French noblewoman and Franciscan tertiary, is a notable religious bearer of the name.
From French, Delphine passed into English use, and English speakers created the pet form Delphie. The spelling with -ph- reflects the Greek and Latin source rather than the French common noun dauphin. The title of the French heir apparent, dauphin, comes from the same animal word but is a separate development from the personal name. Delphie is also close to the English name Delphia, which is usually connected with the Greek place name Delphi; that name has a separate and disputed etymology. Because Delphie can serve as a short form of either Delphine or Delphia, its history is partly the history of those parent names rather than a long independent tradition.
