What Does the Name Deejay Mean?
Deejay is a modern English name made by spelling out the letters D and J the way they are pronounced. Those letters most often stand for disc jockey, a person who plays recorded music for an audience, so the name carries that phrase rather than a translation from an older language. It does not come from a Greek, Latin, or Hebrew root, and it is not related to similar-looking names such as Deja or Dee.
Because it spells initials rather than a word, Deejay belongs to the same English habit as Jay, Kay, Elle, and Em - names formed from the sound of a letter. In some families the same spelling has stood for other pairs of initials, such as Daniel James or Donna Jean, but the disc-jockey sense is the one that made DJ familiar enough to be used as a name in its own right.
Deejay Name History & Origins
The phrase disc jockey entered American English in the 1930s for radio announcers who introduced and played phonograph records; it is often credited to the columnist Walter Winchell, who used it in 1935. The shorter form DJ followed, spreading through radio and later through dance clubs and hip-hop. Writing the abbreviation out as Deejay is a normal step in English, which regularly respells letters phonetically - compare okay for OK or emcee for MC.
Deejay began to be used as a given name in the United States in the later 20th century, part of a broad fashion for names taken from initials, surnames, and common words rather than from traditional saints' names. It has been given to both boys and girls, more often to boys. The spelling varies between Deejay, Dee Jay, and the bare initials DJ, and the name is understood as a spelling of those initials rather than as an inherited name with an older history.
