What Does the Name Dasa Mean?
Dasa stands for two unrelated names. The Sanskrit word dāsa (दास) means "servant" or "slave," and in religious use it is understood as "servant of God," or simply "devotee." In Indian names the element usually follows a deity's name, as in Krishnadasa, "servant of Krishna," and Ramadasa, "servant of Rama." The deeper origin of the Sanskrit word itself is not settled.
The feminine name Dáša, used in Czech and Slovak, is a familiar form of Dagmar. Dagmar is Scandinavian, normally explained as Old Norse dagr "day" plus mær "maiden," giving the sense "day's maiden" or "bright day"; a minority explanation takes the second element from mærr "famous," so the exact sense is uncertain. Dáša is a shortened everyday form of Dagmar rather than a name with a meaning of its own.
Dasa Name History & Origins
Sanskrit dāsa is an old word. In the Rigveda, the oldest Vedic text, dāsa and dasyu are the peoples who opposed the Vedic Aryans; in later Sanskrit the word settled into the sense "servant, slave." Kings with names built on it, such as Divodasa and Sudasa, appear in Vedic literature, and from the medieval period the element became standard in devotional names: Krishnadasa, Ramadasa, Haridasa, and the poet-saints Tulsidas and Surdas. Used on its own, Dasa is less common than the shortened form Das, which is widespread in India as a surname or byname, especially in Bengal and northern India. It is not related to the similar-sounding Dasharatha, whose first element is daśa, "ten."
Dáša belongs to the Scandinavian name Dagmar, which reached Bohemia through a marriage in the other direction: Margaret of Bohemia, daughter of King Ottokar I, married King Valdemar II of Denmark in 1205 and was known in Denmark as Queen Dagmar. Danish tradition holds that she took the name when she married. Dagmar later came into use as a Czech and Slovak name, and Dáša is its usual familiar form. In Slovene and Croatian, Daša is also found, often linked with names such as Danica, though that derivation is not certain. Spelled without its diacritics, Dáša becomes "Dasa," which is why the Czech and Slovak name is sometimes taken for the Indian one; the two are unconnected.
