What Does the Name Darrius Mean?
Darrius is an English spelling of Darius, a name that goes back to Old Persian. The Old Persian form is Dārayavauš, commonly analyzed as a compound of dāraya-, "to hold" or "possess," and vahu-, "good." Read literally, it means something like "holding fast to the good" or "possessing goodness" - a description of a ruler who keeps good order or holds good qualities. The name passed into Greek as Dareios and then into Latin as Darius, the forms through which it reached European languages. Some older reference works gloss the name more loosely as "preserver" or, by a separate folk association, "wealthy"; those are customary paraphrases rather than the literal sense of the Persian parts.
Darrius Name History & Origins
The name belonged to three Achaemenid Persian kings. Darius I, who reigned from 522 to 486 BCE, reorganized the empire and left the great trilingual Behistun inscription; Darius III was the last Achaemenid king, defeated by Alexander the Great. Greek writers recorded the name as Dareios, and that Greek form is the source of the Latin Darius and of the name as it is used in English.
The name also entered Jewish and Christian tradition through the Bible. In the Hebrew and Aramaic texts it appears as Daryavesh: the Book of Daniel names a ruler called "Darius the Mede," and the books of Ezra, Haggai, and Zechariah mention a Persian king Darius in connection with the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Through these biblical and classical associations the name was carried into medieval and early modern Europe and was in use in English well before the nineteenth century.
Darrius is a later English spelling with a doubled r. The extra consonant reflects a change in English spelling only, not a different origin, and both spellings are said the same way. The same Persian name also produced forms in other languages, such as the Italian and Spanish Dario and the Russian Dariy, which are separate branches of the same root rather than sources of the English Darrius.
