What Does the Name Damir Mean?

Damir is a masculine name with two separate explanations that are normally kept apart. In South Slavic use - Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Slovenian - it is commonly understood as a compound of the Slavic elements dati ("to give") and mir ("peace, world"), giving the customary sense "peace-giver" or "the one who gives peace." That reading follows the pattern of many Slavic names built on mir, such as Vladimir and Miroslav, though the first element is not certain.

In Turkic-speaking regions of the Volga and Central Asia - Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and the neighboring republics - Damir is generally connected to the Turkic word for iron (timur / temir / demir). On this explanation the name is a form of an iron name, related to Timur and Demir, with the sense "iron" or "iron-like."

Because these derivations come from different language families and different regions, they are best treated as parallel traditions rather than a single line of descent. The older history is not documented clearly enough to settle which came first.

Damir Name History & Origins

Damir is used across a wide band of eastern and southeastern Europe: Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia on the Slavic side, and Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and the Central Asian republics on the Turkic side. In the Slavic southwest it belongs to the stock of two-part names ending in -mir, alongside Vladimir, Dragomir, and Stanimir.

The Turkic use rests on the ordinary word for iron. Names taken from that word are old in Turkic naming, as the name Timur shows, and the form Damir sits beside Timur and Demir. It is found in Russia, where it is used by Tatar and other Turkic families, and it appears in Cyrillic as Дамир and in the Tatar word for iron, тимер.

Because the Slavic and Turkic explanations rest on different words, the name as used in Zagreb and the name as used in Kazan need not be the same word, even though they look alike and are spelled the same in the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.
