What Does the Name Dak Mean?
Dak is an English short form of Dakota, a name taken from the Dakota people and their language. The Dakota word Dakȟóta is commonly translated as "friend" or "ally," and the related names Lakota and Nakota use corresponding forms. That translation is a traditional interpretation of the people's name, not a separate English word meaning attached to Dak itself.
Dak Name History & Origins
The name Dakota entered English through contact with the Dakota people of the upper Midwest. It was applied to the Dakota Territory, organized in 1861, and later to the states of North Dakota and South Dakota, which were admitted in 1889. The given name Dakota is a modern English use of that place and people name; Dak is a shortened form of it. A notable fictional bearer is Dak Ralter in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back, but such uses do not establish the name's origin.
