What Does the Name Daemon Mean?
Daemon is a rare English given name taken from the word daemon, which comes from the Greek δαίμων (daimōn), meaning "god," "divine power," or "spirit." In early Greek the word named a divine being or an unnamed divine force, and it did not carry the evil sense that the similar English word demon has today. Christian writers used Greek daimonion and Latin daemon for an unclean spirit, and that later sense shaped the modern English demon. The given name keeps the ae spelling, which follows the Latin form rather than the modern English word.
Daemon Name History & Origins
The Greek word δαίμων appears in Homer, where it can mean a god or an undefined divine will, and in Hesiod, who says the men of the Golden Age became daimones who watch over mortals. Plato has Socrates describe his daimonion, a private sign or inner voice that warned him away from certain actions. In later Greek thought, daimones were intermediary beings between the gods and humanity. Through Latin daemon, the term entered Christian usage for an evil or unclean spirit, the source of English demon. The spelling daemon survived in English as a learned variant, and it is this form that the given name follows. The name itself is uncommon; among modern fictional uses, Daemon Targaryen appears in George R. R. Martin's Westeros books. Such uses are much later than the word's Greek and Latin history and do not account for the name's origin.
