What Does the Name Dacian Mean?
Dacian means "of Dacia" or "a Dacian" - a person from Dacia, the ancient region that corresponds roughly to modern Romania and Moldova. The immediate source is the Latin adjective Dacianus, formed from Dacus (plural Daci), the Roman name for the people living north of the lower Danube. The name keeps that ethnic and geographic sense; it does not describe a personal quality or trait.
The deeper origin of the ethnic name itself is not settled. Ancient writers such as Strabo noted that the Dacians had earlier been called Daoi, and one proposal connects the name to a word for "wolf" (compare Phrygian daos, "wolf"), a link sometimes supported by the Dacian wolf-headed standard pictured on Trajan's Column. Other explanations treat Daci as a pre-Roman name whose meaning is simply unknown. So the given name's meaning - "from Dacia" - is clear, while the etymology of Dacia remains uncertain.
Dacian Name History & Origins
Dacia became a Roman province after Trajan's campaigns of 101 - 102 and 105 - 106 AD, which ended the kingdom of the Dacian ruler Decebalus; Rome withdrew from most of the province in the 270s. Roman naming practice regularly turned ethnic and geographic terms into personal names - Germanicus and Britannicus being familiar examples - and the adjective Dacianus belongs to that pattern. The modern given name, however, is chiefly Romanian.
Romanian speakers use Dacian alongside other names taken from the pre-Roman Dacian past, a habit that became more visible from the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars and writers treated the Dacian period as a source of national identity. The name is current in Romania and Moldova, and the feminine form Daciana is also used. Dacian Cioloș, a Romanian politician and former European commissioner, is a contemporary bearer.
