What Does the Name Crixus Mean?

Crixus is a Gaulish personal name, that is, a name from the Celtic language spoken in Gaul and recorded in Latinized form by Roman writers. It is most often explained as coming from a Celtic root meaning "curly" or "curled," the same idea preserved in Welsh crych, "curly, wrinkled." On that reading, the name describes a person with curly hair. The explanation is a reasonable proposal rather than a certainty: the name survives only in its Latin shape, ending in -us, and no Gaulish text defines it. The resemblance to Latin crispus, "curly-haired," is often pointed out, but the two may simply sound alike rather than share a direct origin.

Crixus Name History & Origins

Crixus is known from Roman accounts of the Third Servile War (73 - 71 BC). He was a Gaul who had been enslaved and trained as a gladiator, and in 73 BC he was one of the men who broke out of the gladiator school at Capua. Plutarch, in his Life of Crassus, Appian in his Civil Wars, and the epitomator Florus all name him as a leader of the revolt together with Spartacus. In 72 BC Crixus separated from Spartacus with a large body of followers and was defeated and killed by the Roman consul Lucius Gellius Publicola near Mount Garganus in Apulia.

Roman writers mention the name only in connection with this revolt, so there is no surviving evidence of how widely it was used in Gaul itself. In modern retellings of the slave war, Crixus appears as a character, for example in the television series Spartacus (2010 - 2013).
