What Does the Name Cosmo Mean?

Cosmo traces to the Greek word kosmos (κόσμος), which meant "order" or "arrangement" and also "ornament" - something set in order to please the eye. From that same word came the Greek personal name Kosmas (Κοσμᾶς), which passed into Latin as Cosmas and into Italian as Cosimo and Cosmo. English Cosmo is borrowed from the Italian form rather than taken directly from Greek. The literal sense is "order" or "ordered world"; the usual modern gloss is "universe" or "order."

Cosmo Name History & Origins

The name entered Christian use through Saints Cosmas and Damian, third-century martyrs described in tradition as twin brothers and physicians who treated the sick without payment. Both the Eastern and Western churches venerated them as the Anargyroi, "the silverless ones," and their cult spread widely across Christian Europe, carrying the name Cosmas and its variants with it. In Italy the name took the forms Cosimo and Cosmo. Cosimo de' Medici (1389 - 1464), the Florentine banker who founded his family's political power, bore the name; the Medici adopted Cosmas and Damian as patrons, and the two saints are depicted in the family chapel at San Lorenzo in Florence.

English speakers have used Cosmo since at least the nineteenth century. Bearers include Cosmo Gordon Lang (1864 - 1945), who became Archbishop of Canterbury, and Cosmo Duff-Gordon, a British sportsman who survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The name later appeared in fiction, for example the character Cosmo Brown in the 1952 film Singin' in the Rain.
