What Does the Name Cole Mean?

Cole is an English name meaning "coal," from the Old English word col, which meant charcoal or coal. It began as a byname - a descriptive nickname - for someone with dark hair or a dark complexion, or possibly for a charcoal burner or coal seller. The same Germanic root lies behind the Old Norse personal names Koli and Kolr, which carry the same sense of "coal" or "black."

A second explanation treats Cole as a medieval short form of Nicholas. The -col- element of Nicholas produced pet forms such as Col and Cole in medieval England, so this origin is plausible for some families. In most surviving records the two derivations cannot be separated, and reference works generally list the "coal" byname as the more likely source.

Cole Name History & Origins

Cola was in use as an Old English personal name before the Norman Conquest, and the related Norse name Koli appears in Scandinavian records. After the Conquest, personal names of this type fed into the hereditary surname system that took shape in England between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The surname Cole, along with variants such as Coles and Coale, is found widely in England and later in Scotland, Ireland, and the American colonies, carried by emigrants from Britain.

As a first name, Cole was long uncommon in England, where it served mainly as a surname. It appears as a given name in the English-speaking world by the nineteenth century and became noticeably more common in the late twentieth century, when surnames of this kind were widely adopted as first names.

Cole also has a place in British tradition through the nursery rhyme "Old King Cole," which describes a merry monarch. The character is often linked to Coel Hen, or "Coel the Old," a ruler of the Britons in northern Britain remembered in Welsh tradition. That identification is traditional rather than documented, and the rhyme itself is not recorded until the eighteenth century. The American composer Cole Porter (1891 - 1964) is a familiar bearer of the name as a surname used as a first name.
