What Does the Name Codey Mean?

Codey is a respelled variant of the English surname and given name Cody, which is Irish in origin. The usual derivation is from the Gaelic surname Ó Cuidighthigh, meaning "descendant of Cuidightheach." Cuidightheach was a byname formed from the Irish word cuidightheach, "helper" or "helpful," so the literal sense of the whole name is "descendant of the helper." A second Irish surname, Mac Óda ("son of Óda"), built on the Norman personal name Óda, better known as Odo, was also anglicized as Cody in some localities. Because two different Gaelic surnames were rendered with the same English spelling, the name has more than one possible background, and not all bearers share a single ancestor. Codey keeps the standard pronunciation of Cody and changes only the spelling of the second syllable.

Codey Name History & Origins

The name belongs to a group of Irish surnames that English-speaking clerks wrote down in several ways. Ó Cuidighthigh and Mac Óda both appear in Irish records, and over time they were anglicized as Cuddy, Cuddihy, and Cody, among other spellings. The Mac Óda family is associated with the south-east of Ireland, while Ó Cuidighthigh is found in the southern province of Munster; because the anglicized forms overlapped, the two lines are difficult to tell apart in later English-language records.

The surname traveled with Irish emigrants to Britain and North America. It became widely familiar in the United States through William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846 - 1917), the frontier scout and showman, whose surname was the same Ó Cuidighthigh or Mac Óda name in its anglicized form. During the twentieth century, Cody also came into use as a first name in the United States, and Codey is a later respelling of it that follows the established pronunciation.
