What Does the Name Clovis Mean?
Clovis is a masculine given name of Frankish (Germanic) origin. It comes from the Frankish name Chlodovech (also reconstructed as Chlodwig or Hlodovech), a compound of *hlūd- meaning "fame" and *wīg meaning "battle" or "fight." Literally, it means "famous in battle"; it is often rendered more loosely as "renowned warrior." Medieval Latin writers wrote the name as Chlodovechus, Chlodovaeus, and Clodovaeus, and Clovis is a shortened Latinized form. The name is not related to the Latin word clavis ("key"), despite a superficial resemblance. The same Frankish compound also lies behind the later names Louis, Ludwig, Luis, and Luigi.
Clovis Name History & Origins
The best-known early bearer is Clovis I (c. 466 - 511), king of the Salian Franks. He united several Frankish groups, established Merovingian rule over much of Gaul, and converted to Nicene Christianity; the traditional date of his baptism is 496 at Reims under Saint Remigius. Latin chroniclers recorded his name as Chlodovechus and Chlodovaeus, and the form Clovis appears in later Latin and French historical writing. Later Merovingian kings included Clovis II, Clovis III, and Clovis IV, but the name did not remain common in the French royal line after the Merovingian period.
Through the Latin form Ludovicus, the same Frankish name produced the French Louis, which became the usual name of French kings; Clovis and Louis are therefore related but distinct in form. In modern use, Clovis is a French masculine given name, and Clóvis is the Portuguese form, found in Portugal and especially Brazil. In English, the name appears mainly in historical writing and occasionally as a given name.
