What Does the Name Cid Mean?

Cid is a Spanish name meaning "lord," derived from Andalusi Arabic sayyid (سيد), "lord" or "master," through shortened and honorific forms such as sīd and sīdī ("my lord"). The Arabic word refers to a person of authority or high rank and also serves as a respectful title. In Spanish the spelling reflects that Arabic source: the letter c before i is pronounced as a "th" sound in most of Spain and as "s" in Latin America. The name is unrelated to the English Sid or to Sidney, which have separate origins.

Cid Name History & Origins

The name is best known as the by-name of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a Castilian nobleman and military commander who lived from about the 1040s to 1099. Arabic-speaking inhabitants of al-Andalus called him El Cid, "the lord," and the title was taken up in medieval Latin, Castilian, and other Romance sources. The 12th-century Castilian epic poem Cantar de mio Cid presents him in heroic and partly legendary terms, and later chronicles, ballads, and plays carried the title into French, English, and other European literatures, where it often appears as Le Cid. In these works the historical figure and the legendary hero are blended, so the title's literary fame is broader than the documentary record of the man himself.

As a personal name, Cid is uncommon. It occurs occasionally as a given name in Spanish-speaking countries, where it is also found as a surname, and in English it is known mainly through the medieval hero rather than as an inherited naming tradition.
