What Does the Name Cian Mean?

Cian is an Irish name usually glossed as "ancient" or "long-lived." It comes from the Old Irish word cían, which meant "long," "far off," or "enduring" and could describe distance in space as well as length of time. The name belongs to the Goidelic branch of the Celtic languages, and its slender final consonant gives the Irish pronunciation "keen." The English gloss "ancient" is a natural extension of a word whose basic sense is something lasting or far removed.

The spelling Kian is used for the same name in English-speaking countries, but not every Kian belongs here: the same spelling also stands for an unrelated Persian name, and Cian is not connected to Ciarán (from ciar, "dark") or to Cillian, despite their similar sound.

Cian Name History & Origins

Cian is an old name in Irish tradition. In medieval Irish literature he is Cian, son of Dian Cécht, the physician of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and father of the hero Lugh. In the tale of the death of the sons of Tuireann (Oidheadh Chlainne Tuireann), Cian is killed by Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharba, and Lugh demands a series of famous quests as compensation.

The name was also borne by historical figures: a tenth-century king of Leinster, Cian mac Máelmuaid, is recorded in the annals. The surname Ó Céin, meaning "descendant of Cian," was later anglicized as Keane and O'Keane. By tradition a Saint Cian is the patron of Llangian on the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales.

Cian has remained in use as a personal name in Ireland and is now found in Britain, North America, and Australia, most often spelled Cian or Kian.
