What Does the Name Choszen Mean?

Choszen matches a Polish- or German-style transliteration of the Hebrew noun חֹשֶׁן (ḥōšen), which means "breastplate" or "breastpiece." In the Hebrew Bible the word names the square, stone-set garment worn over the chest by the High Priest, and also the pouch that held the Urim and Thummim. It is a technical term for this one piece of priestly dress; its deeper origin is uncertain, since it is not formed from an otherwise attested Hebrew root, and both a native Hebrew derivation and a borrowing from a neighboring language have been proposed. Later symbolic readings treat the breastplate as a sign that the tribes of Israel were carried before God, but that is an interpretation of the object rather than part of the word's literal sense.

Choszen Name History & Origins

The noun appears in the Hebrew Bible in the instructions for the High Priest's clothing in Exodus 28 and in the account of their execution in Exodus 39, where the fuller phrase is חֹשֶׁן הַמִּשְׁפָּט, "breastplate of judgment," because the Urim and Thummim were kept in it for consulting God's will. It stayed the ordinary Hebrew word for such a breastpiece in later Jewish writing. In the sixteenth century the phrase became the title of the Choshen Mishpat, the part of Rabbi Joseph Karo's code Shulchan Arukh that deals with civil and monetary law, and of the many commentaries written on that part. The spelling Choszen follows the practice of Jewish communities in German- and Polish-speaking lands, where the Hebrew sh sound was written sch or sz; the sz form belongs to the Polish convention rather than the German one.
