What Does the Name Charny Mean?

Charny is a French place name and family name, and it is only rarely used as a given name. It has no independent lexical sense of the kind a word such as grace or supplanter has; its meaning is bound up with the place it names. The final -y is the normal French outcome of the Gallo-Roman suffix -acum, which was attached to a personal name to form the name of a rural estate, so a place of this type ordinarily means "estate of so-and-so." The element that precedes the suffix in Charny is not securely identified. One possible explanation links it to a Celtic root carn-, "heap of stones, rocky ground" (the root behind English cairn), while a derivation from a Latin or Gaulish personal name has also been suggested; the surviving evidence does not settle the question, so no firm translation can be given.

The resemblance to English charnel, which comes from Latin carnarium, "place for bones," is superficial and is not a reliable guide to the name's origin.

Charny Name History & Origins

The name belongs to several French communes, among them Charny in the Côte-d'Or, in the old duchy of Burgundy; Charny-sur-Meuse in the Meuse; and Charny-le-Bachot in the Aube. In the Middle Ages places of this kind gave surnames to the families who held them, following the usual custom by which a knight was known by the seigneurie he possessed. The fullest documented bearer is Geoffroi de Charny (died 1356), a Burgundian knight and seigneur de Charny who wrote the Livre de chevalerie and was killed at the Battle of Poitiers while carrying the Oriflamme, the royal banner of France. The cloth known as the Shroud of Lirey was displayed in the 1350s by his widow, Jeanne de Vergy.

Because Charny was a place and family name rather than a name from the Bible or the calendar of saints, it circulated mainly as a surname, first in France and later among French-speaking communities and emigrants to North America. Its use as a first name is uncommon and follows the transferred-surname pattern that is more typical of English-speaking countries than of France. Charny is also the name of a district of Lévis, Quebec, a former town on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River.
