What Does the Name Celes Mean?
Celes is a rare name usually understood as a short form of Celeste, or of the Spanish names Celestina and Celestino. Those longer names come from Latin caelestis, meaning "heavenly," an adjective formed from caelum, "sky, heaven." The literal sense is "of the sky" or "belonging to heaven"; the customary English meaning is "heavenly."
Celes itself is not a classical Latin personal name and has no separate ancient etymology. Its meaning comes from the longer name it shortens, not from an independent root.
Celes Name History & Origins
The root caelestis was used in Christian Latin for what belongs to heaven. From it came the name Caelestinus, borne by several early popes, and the feminine Caelestina. Romance-language forms include Italian and Spanish Celeste, French Céleste, and the diminutive Celestina. In Spanish, Celes is a familiar shortening of Celestino or Celestina, comparable to other clipped forms of long baptismal names.
As an English given name, Celes is uncommon; it is most often interpreted as a clipped form of Celeste. The name is also known from Celes Chere, a central character in the 1994 video game Final Fantasy VI, but that fictional use is a literary association rather than evidence of the name's origin. The precise route by which Celes entered English use is not well documented.
