What Does the Name Cassius Mean?

Cassius is a Latin name, originally the family name (nomen) of the Roman gens Cassia. Its meaning is not firmly settled. The explanation given most often connects it to Latin cassus, meaning "empty," "hollow," or "vain," but that link is a proposed etymology rather than a demonstrated one. A separate suggestion ties the name to cassis, "helmet," which would give it a military sense; this too is unproven. Because the root is obscure and the family name is very old, the literal meaning is best treated as uncertain.

Cassius Name History & Origins

The gens Cassia was a plebeian family at Rome whose members appear in the earliest records of the Republic. Spurius Cassius Vecellinus held the consulship in 502, 493, and 486 BC and was put to death after being accused of aiming at royal power. Later members of the family used the cognomen Longinus, giving the form Cassius Longinus; the best known is Gaius Cassius Longinus, the senator who, with Brutus, led the conspiracy that killed Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Another bearer of the family name was Cassius Dio, a Greek from Bithynia who wrote a history of Rome in Greek in the early third century AD.

From the Roman family name came the cognomen Cassianus, which stands behind the related name Cassian. In the English-speaking world the name is familiar from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in which Cassius leads the plot against Caesar. In modern times it is also remembered as the birth name of the boxer Muhammad Ali, who was born Cassius Clay in 1942.
