What Does the Name Brydon Mean?
Brydon is a surname of southern Scotland and northern England that is also used as a given name. Its etymology is not securely documented, so no single established meaning can be given. It is generally treated as a habitational or topographic surname - one taken from a place or a feature of the landscape - rather than one formed from a personal name or a trade, but the underlying elements have not been settled.
The spellings Bryden, Brydon, and Brydone occur in the same regions, with the name associated above all with Dumfriesshire and the Scottish Borders. Resemblance to other surnames and place names ending in -don, such as Braden, Braddon, and Braydon, does not by itself show a shared origin, and the relationships among these names remain uncertain.
Brydon Name History & Origins
Brydon belongs to a cluster of spellings - Bryden, Brydone, and Brydon - found chiefly in Dumfriesshire and the Scottish Borders, an area where surnames were often written in more than one way before spelling became fixed. For that reason the variants are usually treated as one family name rather than as separate surnames.
The Scottish writer and traveller Patrick Brydone (1736 - 1818), whose A Tour Through Sicily and Malta was widely read in the late 18th century, is one documented historical bearer of the surname.
Use of Brydon as a first name is a later development, part of the broader English-language practice of turning surnames into given names. It remains uncommon as a given name; the England cricketer Brydon Carse is a present-day example.
