What Does the Name Briseyda Mean?
Briseyda is a spelling variant of Briseida, the medieval form of the Greek name Briseis (Βρισηίς). In Greek, Briseis is a patronymic, a name built from a father's name: it is formed on Brisēs (Βρίσης), also written Briseus, the name the Trojan War tradition gives to her father. Taken literally, then, the name means "daughter of Brises."
The sense of that root is not settled. Proposed connections to Greek words such as βριαρός ("strong") or βρίζω ("to nod, to sleep") are guesses rather than established derivations, and the name's origin may lie outside Greek. What is clear is the patronymic form, not the root meaning; anything beyond "daughter of Brises" is uncertain.
Briseyda Name History & Origins
In Homer's Iliad, Briseis is the captive woman whom Agamemnon takes from Achilles, setting off the quarrel that drives the poem. She is said to come from a town in the Troad, and her father is named Brises. Greek and Roman writers after Homer also use the name in this form.
The Trojan story was retold in the Middle Ages, and the Briseida form belongs to that retelling. Benoît de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie, written around 1160, calls the character Briseida; the character was partly blended with Chryseis, another captive woman in the Trojan story, and Latin prose accounts of the fall of Troy, such as Guido delle Colonne's Historia destructionis Troiae (1287), carried the form across Europe. That blending produced the Cr- branch of the name in later literature: Boccaccio's Criseida in Il Filostrato, Chaucer's Criseyde in Troilus and Criseyde, and Shakespeare's Cressida. The Br- forms, Briseida and Briseyda, preserve the earlier medieval shape rather than the Cr- branch.
Briseida has stayed in use as a given name, especially in Spanish-speaking countries, where the medieval form was kept; Briseyda is a later spelling of it.
