What Does the Name Behren Mean?
Behren is a German name, chiefly a family name, that is usually connected with the older personal name Bernhard. Bernhard combines the Old High German elements bero ("bear") and harti ("hard, bold"), and is commonly glossed as "bold bear" or "brave as a bear." In Low German, Bernhard was shortened to Berend and Behrend, and Behren is grouped with the patronymic surnames formed from those short forms. A separate possibility is that some families took the name from a place called Behren in northern Germany. The personal-name explanation is the more usual one, though which derivation applies to a particular family is not always certain.
Behren Name History & Origins
The group of names behind Behren spread through the Low German-speaking north of Germany, where Bernhard was reduced in everyday speech to Berend and Behrend. From such short forms, patronymic surnames were built with a genitive -s, giving Behrens and Behrends, while forms like Behren appear without that ending. Bernhard itself was common in medieval Germany, and the cult of Bernard of Clairvaux, the twelfth-century abbot, helped spread the name. As a surname, Behren is found in northern Germany, the same region where places called Behren also occur, so a habitational origin is possible for some bearers. Use of Behren as a given name is uncommon; where it appears it seems to follow the family name rather than the older Bernhard tradition.
