What Does the Name Bashir Mean?
Bashir (Arabic: bashīr, بشير) means "bringer of good news" or "bearer of glad tidings." It comes from the Arabic root ب ش ر (b - sh - r), the root of announcing good news. The same root gives bushr and bushra, "glad tidings," and mubashshir, "one who announces good news." The literal sense is a person who carries a happy announcement; "herald" is a loose customary rendering rather than a second meaning.
In the Quran, bashīr is used of prophets who bring good news and also warn, and the participle mubashshir appears in the same way. The root letters also yield bashar, "human being" (linked to bashara, "skin"), a branch of meaning that lexicographers list under the same root but usually define separately. Whether the "good news" sense and the "human/skin" sense are historically related is not settled.
Bashir Name History & Origins
Bashir is an old Arabic personal name. It was in use at the dawn of Islam: Bashir ibn Sa'd al-Ansari was a companion of Muhammad and a narrator of hadith, and other early figures bore the name. Because the word is an ordinary Arabic term for good news and not an exclusively religious one, the name has been used by Arabic-speaking Christians as well as Muslims; the related Christian given name Bishara comes from the same root.
The name traveled with Arabic and with Islam. It appears as Beşir in Turkey, as Bashir in Iran and South Asia, and in parts of Africa. It serves as both a given name and a surname, often with the definite article as al-Bashir. Among later bearers are Bashir Shihab II, the emir of Mount Lebanon in the first half of the 19th century, and Bashir Gemayel, the Lebanese president-elect killed in 1982. The feminine forms Bushra and Bashira are built on the same root.
