What Does the Name Azzurra Mean?
Azzurra is an Italian feminine name meaning "blue" or "azure." It is the feminine form of the Italian adjective azzurro, the everyday word for the color of a clear sky. The color word itself has a long trail behind it: Persian lājvard, the name of the blue stone lapis lazuli, passed into Arabic as lāzaward, and from Arabic it reached medieval Latin and Old French as azur. Italian azzurro grew out of that line. The oldest sense of the root is the stone, not the abstract color; the color meaning developed from the stone's use as a pigment. Adding the feminine ending -a to the adjective produces the given name, the same way Italian forms names from other descriptive adjectives.
Azzurra Name History & Origins
Azzurra belongs to the Italian practice of making given names out of ordinary words for colors and natural qualities, the same group that includes names such as Bianca and Celeste. The word behind it, azzurro, is also Italy's national color: the country's sports teams are known as gli Azzurri and the women's teams as le Azzurre. That association belongs to the color, not to the name, but it keeps the word familiar in Italian daily life.
The color term's own history runs through several languages. Persian lājvard for lapis lazuli became Arabic lāzaward; medieval Latin and Old French took it up as azur, and Italian developed azzurro from there. In French the opening l- was lost when the article was absorbed into the word, which is why the modern forms begin with a vowel. As a personal name, Azzurra sits within the modern Italian habit of drawing given names from words for colors and qualities rather than within the older stock of saint names and Germanic names.
The word has also been used for things other than people. In 1983 the Italian yacht Azzurra, backed by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, challenged for the America's Cup, an early and widely reported Italian entry in that race.
