What Does the Name Azura Mean?
Azura is most often a feminine form of the color word Azure, meaning "azure" or "blue." The color name entered English from Old French azur, which came from Old Italian azzurro, from Arabic lāzaward, a borrowing of Persian lāžward, the word for lapis lazuli. Its literal sense is the deep blue of that stone. In this use, Azura is simply Azure with a feminine -a ending, much like Italian Azzurra.
A separate Azura appears in the Book of Jubilees, an ancient Jewish retelling of Genesis, as a daughter of Adam and Eve and the wife of Seth. The meaning of that name is not established from the text itself, and it should not be assumed to share an origin with the color word. The two traditions are distinct, and modern use often reflects the color-derived name.
Azura Name History & Origins
The name Azura has two distinct strands in recorded use. One is the ancient name in the Book of Jubilees, a Jewish text from the Second Temple period that survives in full mainly in Ge'ez, the classical language of Ethiopia. In Jubilees, Azura is a daughter of Adam and Eve and the wife of Seth. The book was preserved in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition rather than in the Hebrew Bible or most Christian canons, so this early name belongs to a specific religious and textual setting.
The other strand is the modern European given name. It is formed from the color word azure, which entered English through Old French from Italian and ultimately from Arabic and Persian. The Italian feminine form Azzurra became established as a given name in Italy, where it is linked to the national color blue. Azura is a spelling used in English and other languages for the same color-derived name.
In contemporary fiction, Azura is the name of a Daedric Prince in the Elder Scrolls series of video games. This is a literary association, not the origin of the name, but it has made the name familiar to some English speakers. The name also appears in other fantasy works, where its color meaning and sound suit invented-world settings.
