What Does the Name Azlan Mean?
Azlan is a form of Aslan, a Turkish name and word meaning "lion." The Turkish aslan descends from older Turkic arslan, the same word preserved in the name Arslan and in the epithet of the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan. The z spelling is established in South and Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, where Azlan is a common given name; the s spelling (Aslan) is standard in Turkish.
The literal meaning is the animal, "lion." Understandings of the name as standing for courage or strength are symbolic associations rather than part of its etymology.
Azlan Name History & Origins
The word behind the name is old in the Turkic languages, where arslan meant "lion" and was used in personal names long before the modern Turkish form aslan became standard. Turkic rulers carried it as a name and as an epithet, most famously the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan in the eleventh century. In Turkish, Aslan remains both the ordinary word for lion and a frequent given name.
The spelling Azlan belongs mainly to Malay-speaking regions and to South Asian Muslim communities. It is documented in Malaysia as a personal name, notably borne by Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak (1928 - 2014), who also served as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the country's head of state. C. S. Lewis used Aslan for the lion in the Narnia books, a well-known literary use of the Turkish form, but the name and its word origin are older than that work.
