What Does the Name Azariah Mean?
Azariah is a Hebrew name meaning "Yahweh has helped" or "Yah has helped." It combines the root עזר (ʿazar), "to help," with the shortened divine name יָהּ (Yah), a form of the tetragrammaton YHWH. The longer Hebrew form עֲזַרְיָהוּ (Azaryahu) carries the fuller ending -yahu; English Bibles generally render both it and the shorter עֲזַרְיָה as Azariah. Translations that avoid the divine name sometimes paraphrase the meaning as "the Lord has helped."
Azariah Name History & Origins
Azariah is an ancient Hebrew personal name. It appears in the Hebrew Bible for several figures. One is Azariah son of Zadok, an official in Solomon's administration (1 Kings 4:2). Another is the prophet Azariah son of Oded, who spoke to King Asa of Judah (2 Chronicles 15). A third is Azariah the chief priest in the reign of Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 31:10). In the book of Daniel, Azariah is one of Daniel's companions in Babylon; his Babylonian name was Abednego (Daniel 1:6 - 7). The Judean king called Azariah in 2 Kings 15 is the same ruler called Uzziah in 2 Chronicles 26 and Isaiah 6; the names are different and are not related in origin.
In the Greek Old Testament, the name appears as Ἀζαρίας (Azarias), and this became the standard Latin form. The Book of Tobit, an ancient Jewish work preserved in Greek, has the angel Raphael travel in disguise under the name Azariah. English translations of the Hebrew Bible use Azariah, while Azarias is familiar from Tobit and other deuterocanonical books. The name passed into Christian usage through the Greek and Latin Bible, and in English it is now used as a given name; the related spelling Azaria also occurs.
