What Does the Name Azan Mean?
Azan is an Arabic name meaning "call to prayer." It comes from the Arabic noun adhān (أَذَان), "announcement, proclamation, call," built on the root ʾ-dh-n. The related verb adhana means "to announce" or "to proclaim," and the same root yields idhn, "permission," and udhun, "ear." The literal sense of the word is "announcement"; the customary religious sense, and the sense the name carries, is the summons to prayer given from a mosque.
Spelling varies with language: Azaan and Adhan are common English renderings of the same word, and Persian and Urdu write it azān (اذان). The name is a devotional borrowing from Islamic practice rather than a name with a separate older genealogy in another language.
Azan Name History & Origins
The word behind the name belongs to the earliest layer of Islamic practice. Muslim tradition holds that the call to prayer was instituted in Medina after the migration of 622 CE, when the community needed a way to summon worshippers; accounts say a bell and a horn were considered and set aside in favor of the human voice. Bilal ibn Rabah, an Abyssinian man freed from slavery by Abu Bakr, is remembered in that tradition as the most prominent of the first muezzins (Arabic muʾadhdhin), the one who gave the call.
With the spread of Arabic as a religious language, the term moved into other Muslim languages: Persian and Urdu azān, Turkish ezan, each naming the same five daily call. As a given name, Azan is used by Muslim families, most commonly in South Asia - Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh - and among South Asian Muslims in the United States, Britain, and the Gulf states, often alongside spellings such as Azaan and Adhan.
