What Does the Name Aylen Mean?
Aylen is chiefly a Mapuche name, from Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people of south-central Chile and Argentina. It is most often glossed as "joy" or "happiness." The root is usually connected with the Mapudungun word ayen, referring to laughter or rejoicing, though some accounts link it instead to ayün, "to love." Because those two words are close in form, the precise source is not settled. Spanish spellings include Ayelén, Aylén, and Ailén; the written accent marks stress on the final syllable.
In English-speaking countries the name also appears as a respelling of Aileen, the Irish name that comes from Eibhlín, a diminutive of Aibhilín, which entered Irish through Norman French Aveline. That line of derivation is separate from the Mapuche name and has its own uncertain etymology. A Turkish name spelled Aylen, sometimes traced to ay, "moon," is also occasionally cited, but reliable documentation for it is thin.
Aylen Name History & Origins
The Mapuche have lived for centuries in the lands around the Biobío River and southward, in what are now Chile and Argentina. Under Spanish colonial rule and later state pressure to register children with Spanish names, Mapudungun names were kept out of many official records, so written traces of individual names are uneven. Aylen belongs to the group of Mapuche names that returned to wider use in Argentina and Chile in the late twentieth century, as families again gave children names drawn from Mapudungun.
Use of the name in English is more recent and harder to document. It appears both as a direct borrowing of the Mapuche name and as a spelling of the Irish-derived Aileen, and the two streams are difficult to tell apart in English-language records because they look identical in print.
