What Does the Name Aws Mean?

Aws (Arabic أوس) is an Arabic masculine name. Its primary meaning is "wolf": classical Arabic dictionaries give al-aws as a word for the wolf, and the name is simply that noun used as a personal name, with no added elements. Within the same Arabic root (أ - و - س) lexicographers also record a verbal sense of giving and a noun sense of "gift" or "present," but the meaning normally attached to the name is "wolf."

Aws Name History & Origins

Aws is part of the older Arabic naming stock rather than a name formed inside Islam. Its best-documented early use is tribal. The Banū Aws were one of the two main Arab tribes of Medina (Yathrib) in the generations before and at the time of the emergence of Islam, the other being the Banū Khazraj; traditional genealogies trace the tribe to an ancestor called al-Aws. Together these two tribes made up most of the Anṣār, the Medinan Muslims who supported Muhammad after the migration from Mecca, and the tribe's name supplied a personal name that individual members bore.

Several figures of the first Islamic generations were named Aws, among them the poet Aws ibn Thabit, a companion of Muhammad from Medina. Because the name belonged to the pre-Islamic Arab repertory, it was not displaced by the arrival of Islam and stayed in ordinary use in Arab societies, particularly on the Arabian Peninsula and in the settled Arab towns of the eastern Mediterranean and Iraq. In English the name is transliterated both as Aws and as Aus; the two spellings represent the same Arabic name.
