What Does the Name Avry Mean?
Avry is a respelled form of the English name Avery and shares its meaning and origin rather than having an etymology of its own. The name goes back to a personal name that Norman settlers brought to England after 1066: Anglo-Norman French Auvrai, also written Aufrey. That Norman name is usually traced to a Germanic compound of alb, "elf," and rīc, "ruler" or "power," so Avery is commonly glossed as "elf ruler." A competing explanation links Avery to the Old English name Ælfræd (Alfred), "elf counsel," whose Norman French forms resembled Auvrai; the Old English Ælfric, "elf ruler," has also been proposed as the source. The two main explanations agree that the first element means "elf" but disagree about the second, so the meaning is given either as "elf ruler" or, less often, "elf counsel." The spelling Avry does not change any of this.
Avry Name History & Origins
Avery began as a surname in medieval England, formed from the personal name of a Norman ancestor and written in various spellings in records of the 12th and 13th centuries. Like many English surnames, it was later taken up as a first name; Avery appears as a given name in England and in colonial New England in the 17th century and has remained in use in English-speaking countries since. It has been given to boys and to girls, with feminine use becoming more noticeable in the United States during the later 20th century.
Avry is a later spelling of that name, written without the e of Avery. Simplified respellings of familiar names are common in the United States, and Avry is used chiefly there. It is a much less frequent spelling than Avery. A separate Hebrew masculine name, Avri, also exists and is sometimes spelled Avry; it is not related to the English name.
