What Does the Name Avrie Mean?

Avrie is a respelling of Avery, an English name meaning "elf ruler." Avery comes from a Norman French form of the Germanic personal name Alberic (Latin Albericus), made of albiz, "elf," and rīkijaz, "ruler" or "power." The same two elements form the Old English name Ælfric, "elf ruler," which some take as the source instead. A third explanation connects Avery to the Old English Ælfræd (Alfred), "elf counsel," whose second element means "counsel" rather than "ruler." The "ruler" explanation is the one given most often, but the competing derivations are not fully settled. Avrie has no separate etymology of its own; it carries the meaning of the name it respells.

Avrie Name History & Origins

Avery began as an English surname. Norman French settlers in England after 1066 brought personal names such as Alberic, and forms of that name appear in medieval English records as a family name. In time Avery became an inherited surname in England and later in New England and other English-speaking regions.

From the 1600s Avery was also used occasionally as a first name, at first mainly for boys. In the late 20th century it became common as a girl's name in the United States, and that feminine use now dominates.

The spelling Avrie belongs to a group of respellings of Avery, along with Averie and Averi, that replace the final -y with -ie or -i. Its pronunciation follows Avery's, though the spelling with a single v and initial A also invites a short a at the start.
