What Does the Name Aviv Mean?
Aviv (Hebrew אָבִיב) is a Hebrew name meaning "spring" - both the season of springtime and, more literally, the fresh green ears of ripening grain. It comes from the Hebrew root א-ב-ב. In the Hebrew Bible the word is used for barley still standing in the ear (Exodus 9:31) and for the spring month: Exodus 13:4 speaks of "the month of Aviv," a month later known by the Babylonian name Nisan. The name is therefore a direct use of an ordinary Hebrew noun, not a compound or a shortening of some longer name.
Aviv Name History & Origins
Aviv began as a Hebrew word rather than a personal name. It belongs to the agricultural calendar of the Bible: the month of Aviv was the time of the barley harvest and of Passover, and the Torah repeatedly ties the holiday to that month. After the Babylonian exile the month was generally called Nisan, while aviv remained the ordinary Hebrew word for spring.
As a given name, Aviv belongs to modern Hebrew. It came into use among Hebrew-speaking Jews in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Hebrew was revived as a spoken language and older biblical vocabulary was taken up for everyday names. It is a common masculine name in Israel; the related feminine form is usually Aviva.
The best-known public use of the word is the city name Tel Aviv, meaning "hill of spring." The name was adopted in 1910, drawing on the Hebrew title given to Theodor Herzl's novel Altneuland ("Old-New Land"), and it also echoes the biblical place-name Tel-abib in Ezekiel 3:15. This is a place name and does not explain the origin of the personal name.
