What Does the Name Aurie Mean?
Aurie is a given name, chiefly feminine, used in English-speaking countries. It is usually explained as a short or pet form of longer names beginning with Aur-, above all Aurelia and Aurora. Aurelia is the feminine form of the Roman family name Aurelius, traditionally connected with Latin aureus, "golden," from aurum, "gold." Aurora is the Latin word for "dawn" and the name of the Roman goddess of dawn. Depending on which longer name lies behind it, Aurie is understood to mean "golden" or "dawn."
Its exact derivation is uncertain, because Aurie is normally treated as a pet form rather than as a name with a separate etymology of its own. The connection to the Latin Aur- names is the most likely explanation, not a recorded one, and the meaning above should be read with that uncertainty in mind.
Aurie Name History & Origins
Aurie fits an English pattern of familiar forms made by clipping a longer name and adding -ie, as with Annie from Ann or Katie from Katherine. The names it shortens are Latin. Aurelia is the feminine form of the Roman family name Aurelius, carried by the gens Aurelia and used as a personal name in Rome. Aurora was the Roman goddess of dawn, the counterpart of the Greek Eos; her name is simply the Latin noun for dawn.
Aurora stayed in use in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Romania as a traditional given name, and it also came into English, where Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poem Aurora Leigh (1856) is a well-known literary use rather than the earliest one. Aurelia likewise continued in continental Europe and was revived in England in the nineteenth century. Aurie is best understood as a spoken short form arising from this group of names.
