What Does the Name Auguste Mean?

Auguste is the French form of the Latin name Augustus, meaning "venerable," "majestic," or "worthy of reverence." The Latin word augustus comes from the verb augere, "to increase" or "to augment," so its oldest sense was something like "increased" or "blessed with growth," which developed into the customary meaning "consecrated" and "majestic." A few Roman writers linked the word to augurium, the reading of omens from birds, but the derivation from augere is the one generally accepted. In German, Auguste is a separate usage: it is the feminine form of August, not the French masculine name.

Auguste Name History & Origins

The Latin Augustus began as a title rather than a personal name. In 27 BC the Roman Senate granted it to Octavian, the adopted heir of Julius Caesar, and he is known to history as the emperor Augustus. Later emperors took the same title, and over time Augustus spread as a given name throughout the Latin-speaking world, with the feminine Augusta alongside it. The French form Auguste developed from this Latin name and was used in France for boys.

In German-speaking lands, Auguste came into use as a feminine given name, the counterpart of the masculine August, a form seen in the name of the German empress Auguste Viktoria. Famous bearers of the French masculine name include the philosopher Auguste Comte (1798 - 1857) and the sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917). Auguste should not be confused with Augustine, which comes from the related Latin Augustinus.
