What Does the Name Aubree Mean?
Aubree is a respelling of Aubrey, a name English took from Norman French. The Norman French given name Aubri, also written Alberi, goes back to the Germanic compound Alberich, and the usual literal sense of that compound is "elf ruler" or "ruler of elves."
The two parts are Old High German alb, "elf," and rīhhi, "power, ruler," the second element being the common Germanic root rīk- found in many ruler-names. The compound pictures a ruler over elf-kind rather than over people, which is why translations like "elf power" and "elf ruler" both appear.
Aubree is not a separate name with an origin of its own. The -ee ending is simply a way of spelling the long "ee" sound at the end of Aubrey, so the meaning of Aubree is the meaning of Aubrey.
Aubree Name History & Origins
Aubrey entered England with the Normans following the Conquest of 1066 and was used there as a man's name in the Middle Ages; in later centuries it survived chiefly as an English surname. The Germanic name behind it, Alberich, is also the name of the dwarf who guards the Nibelung treasure in medieval German legend, including the Nibelungenlied. That is a German literary use of the source name, not part of the history of Aubrey and Aubree as English given names.
Like a number of medieval names, Aubrey was brought back into use as a first name in the 1800s, and in the twentieth century it became common in the United States as a girl's name. The spelling Aubree belongs to a familiar group of English feminine respellings in which a final -y becomes -ee, such as Stacey and Stacee. Aubree keeps the same pronunciation and origin as Aubrey and developed alongside the girl's name in American use.
