What Does the Name Atom Mean?

Atom is the English word for the smallest unit of matter, from Latin atomus, which was borrowed from Greek átomos, meaning "indivisible" or "uncuttable." The Greek word was built from the negative prefix a- ("not") plus tomos ("a cut, a slice"), from the verb temnein, "to cut." Greek writers used it for particles of matter thought to be too small to divide any further. Used as a given name, Atom carries that literal sense of the word rather than a separate traditional meaning, and despite the similar sound it is not related to Adam, which comes from Hebrew.

Atom Name History & Origins

The word traveled into Western European languages through Latin: Greek átomos became Latin atomus, and from that came French atome and English atom. The idea behind the word belongs to the Greek philosophers Leucippus and Democritus, who taught that matter is made of indivisible particles; the Roman poet Lucretius presented that view in De rerum natura.

As a personal name, Atom is uncommon and appears mainly in modern English-speaking countries, where it is a direct use of the scientific word rather than an inherited name from Old English, the Bible, or the usual Germanic and saints' name stocks. The Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, born in 1960, is a well-known bearer. A separate and later use is fictional: Osamu Tezuka's manga Tetsuwan Atomu (1952), published in English as Astro Boy, named its robot boy Atom, a literary borrowing of the word rather than the source of it as a personal name.
