What Does the Name Athenas Mean?
Athenas is a Greek-derived name whose established meaning is uncertain. It is closely related to the name Athena, the Greek goddess, but the ultimate origin of that name is disputed. It is often connected with the city name Athens (Greek Athēnai), yet scholars debate whether the goddess was named for the city or the city for the goddess.
The ending -as in Athenas matches the Greek genitive ending in Athēnâs (Ἀθηνᾶς), which means "of Athena." That grammatical sense is not the same as an etymological meaning of the name. The common idea that Athena means "wisdom" comes from her role as a goddess of wisdom, not from a securely established Greek root.
Athenas Name History & Origins
Athena was a major Greek goddess associated with Athens, craft, war, and wisdom. Her name appears in Mycenaean Greek Linear B tablets as a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja, usually read as "Lady Athena," which shows that the name was in use in the Bronze Age. The city name Athens is Athēnai in Greek, a plural form, and its connection with the goddess is ancient but debated in direction.
Athenas belongs to the same name complex. In Greek, Athēnâs (Ἀθηνᾶς) is the genitive singular of Athēnâ, used in phrases meaning "of Athena"; the transliterated form Athenas reflects that ending. As a personal name, Athenas is best understood as a variant form of Athena rather than as a separate traditional name with its own mythology.
