What Does the Name Ata Mean?
Ata comes from two unrelated sources with different meanings. In Turkic languages such as Turkish, Kazakh, and Azerbaijani, ata means "father" or, more often in modern usage, "forefather" or "ancestor." In Turkish the everyday word for a father is baba, while ata refers to an ancestor or an earlier generation. The Turkic word is shared across the language family: Kazakh ата means "grandfather, ancestor," and Uzbek ota means "father."
Independently, the Arabic word ʿaṭāʾ (عطاء) means "gift" or "bestowal," and Ata is a masculine given name taken from it. The same word entered Persian and Urdu as عطا, also meaning "gift," and it appears in longer names such as Ataullah, "gift of God." The Turkic and Arabic origins are separate; the two words merely have the same spelling in Latin letters.
Ata Name History & Origins
Turkic-speaking peoples used ata for a male ancestor, and Kazakh tradition preserved the zheti ata, or "seven grandfathers" - the seven generations of ancestry a person was expected to be able to name. Ata is used as a given name in Turkey and Azerbaijan, and it forms the first element of longer names such as Atahan and Atabay. In Turkey the word became widely known through the surname Atatürk, "father of the Turks," which the Grand National Assembly granted to Mustafa Kemal in 1934 under the new surname law.
The Arabic name ʿAṭāʾ is recorded early in Islamic history: Ata ibn Abi Rabah, a jurist and hadith transmitter in Mecca, died around 732 CE, and Ata al-Khurasani, an early ascetic, lived in the following generation. From Arabic the name passed into Persian, Urdu, and other languages of Muslim communities, where it usually keeps the sense "gift."
Other, unrelated words share the spelling. Ata is a village in Baranya County, Hungary; the Ata are an indigenous people of the Philippines; and in Tongan and Samoan, ata means "image" or "shadow." None of these is the source of the personal name.
