What Does the Name Astoria Mean?

Astoria is a place name meaning "Astor's place" or "Astor's settlement," formed by adding the Latin place-name ending -ia to the surname Astor. Its history as a personal name runs through the towns, hotels, and landmarks named for the Astor family rather than through an ancient given-name tradition. The surname itself is of uncertain origin: the family of John Jacob Astor (1763 - 1848) came from Walldorf, near Heidelberg, in what is now Germany, but the derivation of the name Astor before that is not firmly established.

The name's resemblance to Greek astēr ("star") and to the mythological name Asteria has encouraged a "star" reading of Astoria. That is a later symbolic association, not the name's etymology; the Greek word for star plays no part in the place name's formation.

Astoria Name History & Origins

Astoria entered wide use as an American place name tied to John Jacob Astor, the German-born fur trader and New York real-estate investor. In 1811 the Pacific Fur Company, which Astor organized, built Fort Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. The post became the first American settlement on the Pacific coast; it passed to the British North West Company during the War of 1812 and was renamed Fort George, and the town of Astoria, Oregon, later grew at the site. Washington Irving's Astoria (1836) told the story of the venture and carried the name to a broad readership.

In 1839 the Queens village of Astoria, New York, was named by Stephen A. Halsey in honor of Astor, whose holdings included land there; the area had earlier been known as Hallett's Cove. Towns in Illinois and other states took the same name, and the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York - its two joined buildings opened in 1897 - drew "Astoria" from the Astor family as well. As a girl's given name, Astoria is uncommon and is used chiefly as a transferred place name, sometimes with an intended "star" association rather than any inherited meaning.
