What Does the Name Ashir Mean?

Ashir comes from Arabic ʿāshir (عاشر), the active participle of the verb ʿashara, "to associate with" or "to keep company with." Read this way, the name means "companion" or "one who associates." The very same Arabic form ʿāshir is also the ordinal number "tenth," from the root ʿ-š-r that gives ʿashara, "ten." Both senses belong to one root and one word shape, so an Arabic Ashir can carry either idea. A closely related Arabic word, ʿashīr (عشير), means "clan" or "tribe" and also "close companion," and the English spelling Ashir can stand for either word.

That same Semitic root produced a family of Hebrew words about counting and wealth: ʿeser (עֶשֶׂר), "ten"; maʿaser (מַעֲשֵׂר), "tithe"; ʿosher (עֹשֶׁר), "wealth"; and the adjective ʿashir (עָשִׁיר), "rich." Because English renders both the Arabic and the Hebrew word as Ashir, the name is sometimes explained as "rich" as well as "companion." The similar-looking biblical name Asher is a different name from a different root, and the two are not the same.

Ashir Name History & Origins

Arabic given names are frequently formed from participles and adjectives, and ʿĀshir follows that pattern. It is used as a male given name in Arabic-speaking countries, and it traveled with Islam into other languages: Turkish has Aşir, and Turkic Muslim communities in Central Asia use Ashir (Kazakh Әшір). In those languages the name is understood through its Arabic sense rather than through a Turkic root.

In Hebrew, ʿashir (עָשִׁיר), "rich," is an ordinary adjective rather than a biblical personal name. The Hebrew Bible does contain a similar-sounding verb meaning "I will sing," which opens the Song of the Sea (Exodus 15:1), but that is a verb, not a name. The long-established biblical name in this range of sound is Asher, a son of Jacob, which comes from a different root and has its own separate history.

Ashir therefore has no single documented line of descent. In English it appears mainly as a transliteration of the Arabic name, and its meaning is usually given from Arabic.
