What Does the Name Asa Mean?
Asa is a masculine given name of Hebrew origin. It is the name of a king of Judah in the Hebrew Bible, and it is traditionally explained as meaning healer or physician. That explanation rests on a Semitic word for a healer, seen in the Aramaic ʾasyā, "physician." The derivation is not fully certain, because the name is short and rare in the biblical text; the "healer" sense is a traditional interpretation rather than a documented one.
Two unrelated names are spelled the same way but have different origins. The Old Norse Ása is a feminine name, a short form of names beginning with Ás-, from áss, "god." The Japanese name Asa (written 朝, "morning") is separate as well. Neither one is the source of the English masculine name.
Asa Name History & Origins
In the Hebrew Bible, Asa is the third king of the southern kingdom of Judah, a son of Abijah and a descendant of David. The books of 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles describe a reign of forty-one years in Jerusalem, his removal of foreign altars and images, and his later alliance with Ben-hadad of Aram against Baasha, king of Israel. He also appears in the genealogy of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. A second, minor Asa is named in the Levite genealogies of 1 Chronicles.
The English given name is taken directly from this biblical king. It has been used in the English-speaking world as an Old Testament name and was borne in the United States by nineteenth-century figures such as the botanist Asa Gray and the businessman Asa Candler.
In modern Hebrew the name is used as a masculine given name.
