What Does the Name Arsalan Mean?

Arsalan means "lion." It comes from Turkic, not Arabic. The Turkic noun arslan is the ordinary word for a lion; it is recorded in Old Turkic and survives in Turkish as arslan or aslan. The form Arsalan reflects Persian and South Asian pronunciation, in which a short vowel is inserted between the s and l. It is written ارسلان in Arabic script. The Arabic word for lion is asad, a separate name with a different origin.

In Turkic and Persianate cultures, the lion stood for courage, strength, and royal power, and the word arslan was used in rulers' names and epithets. The name's literal meaning, however, remains "lion."

Arsalan Name History & Origins

The Turkic word arslan is recorded in Old Turkic sources, and it was used as a personal name among Turkic peoples by the time of the Seljuk dynasty. In the 11th century, Arslan Isra'il, a son of Seljuk, bore the name, and the Seljuk sultan known as Alp Arslan ("Heroic Lion," Muhammad ibn Dawud Chaghri) ruled from 1063 to 1072 and defeated the Byzantine army at Manzikert in 1071. In Alp Arslan, the element alp means "hero," showing the name used in a royal compound.

With the spread of Turkic dynasties and Persianate culture, the name entered Persian as Arsalān and also became established in Urdu, Pashto, and other languages of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asia. In modern Turkish, the related form Arslan serves as both a given name and a surname, while the usual Turkish word for the animal is aslan. The Arabic name Asad is unrelated.
