What Does the Name Arrabella Mean?

Arrabella is a variant spelling of Arabella, a name used chiefly in Britain and other English-speaking countries. Its derivation is not settled. The explanation found most often is that Arabella is a medieval Scottish form of Annabel, itself a variant of Amabel, from Latin amabilis, "lovable." A second proposal connects it to the medieval Latin personal name Orabilis, meaning "prayerful" or "worthy to be entreated," from the Latin verb orare, "to pray"; Orabilis is recorded as a name in medieval Scotland. A third reading, common in name books, takes Latin ara "altar" with bella "beautiful" to give "beautiful altar" - better treated as a later interpretation than as a documented origin. None of these is fully established, so the precise etymology remains uncertain.

Arrabella Name History & Origins

Arabella is a Latin-sounding form that appears in Britain in the later Middle Ages and is usually linked to the older name Amabel or Annabel. Amabel entered English use after the Norman Conquest by way of Old French Amable, from Latin amabilis, "lovable."

The form Arabella is associated early with Scotland, where the Latin-sounding name Orabilis was also used as a personal name in the medieval period. Some writers therefore treat Arabella as a Latinized reshaping of Orabilis, though this is not certain.

The name is well attested in England by the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A notable early bearer was Arbella Stuart (1575 - 1615), granddaughter of Bess of Hardwick and a cousin of King James VI and I; her spelling, Arbella, shows how fluid the name's form remained. In the nineteenth century Arabella appeared in fiction, including Arabella Allen in Charles Dickens's The Pickwick Papers and Arabella Donn in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. The spelling Arrabella, with a doubled r, is a less common modern variant of Arabella.
