What Does the Name Aro Mean?

Aro has no single established etymology as a personal name. The short string aro exists as an ordinary word in several unrelated languages, and those word senses are behind most meanings that get attached to it.

In Finnish, aro is a landscape word for dry, grassy open ground - a steppe or heath. It is not the same word as the Finnish given name Aaro, which comes from Aaron by way of Greek and Latin. In Māori, aro is a verb meaning to turn toward, heed, or attend to, and a noun for attention or presence; it also appears inside the common word aroha (love, compassion). In Igbo, Aro is the name of a people and of their historic town, Arochukwu, in southeastern Nigeria, and Aro is used as a personal and family name in that region, though a clear lexical meaning for the name is not well documented.

These senses belong to separate languages and should not be treated as branches of one root. Where the name is used in English, it is usually a short, unanalyzed form rather than a translation of any of these words.

Aro Name History & Origins

Aro turns up independently in several languages, so it does not have one line of descent.

In Finland, aro is an old word for dry grassland, and it became a family name; Finnish surnames are often taken from land and nature. The Finnish male given name Aaro follows a different route, from the biblical Aaron through Greek and Latin, and is not the source of Aro.

In Igbo-speaking southeastern Nigeria, Aro is tied to the town of Arochukwu and to the Aro people, who built a trading network known as the Aro Confederacy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Arochukwu was the home of the Ibini Ukpabi oracle, which British traders and officials called the Long Juju. A British military campaign in 1901 - 1902, the Anglo-Aro War, broke the confederacy. Aro remains in use in the region as a personal and family name.

In Māori, aro is chiefly a common word rather than a traditional personal name, and it appears in place names such as Te Aro in Wellington and in the town name Te Aroha.

In English-language fiction, Aro is a leader of the Volturi in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight novels, published between 2005 and 2008. That is a modern literary use of the name, not evidence of where it came from.
