What Does the Name Arman Mean?

Arman has two independent origins, and they give the name two different meanings. In Persian, ārman (آرمان) means "ideal," "aspiration," "wish," or "hope." The same word passed into Urdu and Hindi as arman (अरमान / ارمان), where it means a wish or longing, and into several Turkic languages, including Kazakh (Арман), where it is usually taken to mean "dream" or "wish." In these traditions the name is simply the ordinary noun used as a personal name.

Separately, Arman appears in Europe as a shortened form of the Germanic name reconstructed as Hariman, built from hari "army" and man "man," so "man of the army" or "soldier." That name also produced Herman, Armand, and Ermanno, and the clipped Arman is used alongside them in German-, French-, and Spanish-speaking areas. The two traditions are unrelated; the similar sound comes from separate languages.

Arman Name History & Origins

The Persian word ārman is generally traced to Middle Persian ārmān, with the sense of a wish or desire. In Persian and in Urdu, ārman is common in poetry for a longing, often an unfulfilled one. Arman is a current given name in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, and it is also used by Urdu and Hindi speakers in South Asia. Among Turkic peoples, Arman (Kazakh Арман, and similar forms elsewhere in Central Asia) is a well-established name meaning "dream" or "wish," usually explained as a borrowing of the Persian word.

The European Arman goes back to the Germanic naming element hari- "army" joined to man "man." The full name is recorded in medieval Latin as Harimannus and appears in Old High German as Hariman, developing into Hermann in German, Armand in French, and Ermanno in Italian. Arman itself is a shortened or regional form and is often used as a short form of Armand or Hermann rather than as a fully separate name. The French-American artist Arman (Armand Fernandez, 1928 - 2005) took his single working name from his birth name Armand.
