What Does the Name Arizona Mean?

Arizona is the name of a U.S. state, and as a given name it is a place-name adoption rather than a traditional personal name. Its ultimate origin is disputed, and the most commonly cited explanations point to two very different languages. The first traces it to the O'odham (Pima) language of the desert Southwest, where a phrase such as alĭ ṣonak is glossed as "small spring" or "place of the small spring," referring to a water source. The second derives it from Basque aritz ona, "good oak," from aritz (oak) and ona (good). A third and popular but linguistically weak account treats it as Spanish zona arida, "arid zone," which is a folk reinterpretation rather than a genuine root. No single etymology is settled.

Arizona Name History & Origins

The name reached English through Spanish. In the 1730s and 1740s, Spanish records for the province of Sonora, in present-day Mexico, mention a place called Arizonac. A rich silver discovery there in 1736 - the so-called Planchas de Plata - drew attention to the spot and helped fix the name in written use. The final -c was eventually dropped, giving Arizona.

After the Mexican-American War, the name was applied to the land north of the border. Arizona became a separate U.S. territory in 1863 and a state in 1912. The state's name supplied the given name, which appears mainly in the United States and is given to girls more often than to boys. Its use as a personal name is modern and modest in scale, distinct from the much older history of the place name itself.
