What Does the Name Aries Mean?
Aries means "ram" and comes from Latin ariēs, the ordinary Latin noun for a male sheep (genitive arietis). That is the name's core sense, and it is also the sense behind the constellation and zodiac sign. The deeper origin of the Latin word is uncertain; some reference works suggest a possible link to Greek ἔριφος (eriphos), "young goat," but this is not settled, and the Latin noun is not derived from the similar-sounding Greek god name Ares.
The literal meaning is simply the animal. Interpretations of the sign as standing for initiative, leadership, or beginnings are later symbolic readings attached to the zodiac, not part of the word's etymology.
Aries Name History & Origins
The ram was a common animal across the ancient Mediterranean, and the constellation that English speakers call Aries was known to Greek astronomers as Κριός (Krios), "ram." Latin writers used their own word for the animal, ariēs, for the same star group, and this Latin name passed into later European astronomy and astrology. Ptolemy's star catalog in the Almagest lists the stars of Κριός, the ram. The constellation's traditional myth connects it with the ram with the golden fleece, the animal that carried Phrixus to Colchis and whose fleece Jason later went to fetch; the story is a traditional mythological association rather than a record of the name's origin.
The sign also has an astronomical tie to spring. In antiquity the point where the sun crossed the celestial equator northward lay in Aries, and it was called the First Point of Aries. Because of the slow wobble of the earth's axis, that point has since moved into Pisces, though the older name is still used.
In English-speaking countries, Aries is used as a given name taken from the zodiac sign, alongside names such as Leo and Taurus, rather than inherited as a personal name from Latin or Greek antiquity. It is distinct from the Greek name Ares, which belongs to the god of war and has its own separate origin.
